County board hears frac sand presentation: Searching for 'northern white'

Gerald "Gerry" Duffy, with the Monroe Moxness Berg law firm, began with a brief presentation and then took questions from the board. No members of the approximately 60-person audience had signed up to speak during public comment time, and therefore questions were restricted to board members.
Supervisor Andrew Mommsen asked about Duffy's professional experience in the field.

"I've done a lot of gravel mine permitting during my professional career. This just became sort of an extenuation of that as I've been going to counties and getting mining permits. Frac sand mining is just like any other mining. It's pretty much the same; the difference is the heavy processing."

In response to Mommsen's follow-up question, Duffy stated he is not currently representing a company looking to mine in Barron County. Duffy described some basic frac sand industry terms and definitions, and explained why the product is in hot demand in this region

Fractured sand is used in the oil and gas industry to get production out of wells that have lost their production capacity, Duffy said. Now with more modern technology, "they can use the fracturing sand to go down and actually get out product that they never used to be able to get, so it's been a benefit to both the domestic oil and gas industry and the Canadian oil and gas industry."

"Eastern Minnesota and Western Wisconsin have some of the best fracturing sand in the country. It's called "northern white." It is what they look for because it's hard, it's spherical... and it can be cleaned so it's pretty pure - it actually looks almost white when they wash the iron deposits out of it.
"The better frac sand tends to be the more coarse frac sand."

"Typically, the product that is most in demand is what's called 20/40: it falls through the 20 mesh, and gets caught by the 40 mesh; 40/70 falls through the 40 and gets caught by the 70. Then they have 100 mesh. Those are the three product lines for frac sand.

"The more 20/40 you've got, obviously, the better facility you've got," Duffy said.

"Mining frac sand is like mining sand and gravel. It's what we've been doing in the industry getting ready-mix concrete and hot-mix asphalt for years.
"The difference in frac sand isn't in the mining process, rather what happens after it's mined.

"Because what makes it valuable is they have to dry it.
