Daily Update: Hawpe's future, notes, minor leagues
One has to wonder where Brad Hawpe fits in when he is ready to return from the disabled list.
Anthony Rizzo is the Padres first baseman. And right field seems to have become a Chris Denorfia-Will Venable platoon.
There are questions about Hawpe even as a reserve.
Jesus Guzman is a right-handed option at first of Rizzo needs a day off.
And Hawpe, not the greatest defender at first or in right, had an elbow problem that was preventing him from playing in the outfield before he went on the disabled list (retroactive to June 19) with a strained right middle finger.
The Padres’ need for a designated hitter will end by the time Hawpe is eligible to be activated. After a strong May, Hawpe is in a 4-for-26 slump with 12 strikeouts with his average slipping back to .231 with four homers and 19 RBI in 195 strikeouts.
Working in Hawpe’s favor is the fact that the Padres still owe the just turned 32-year-old just over $2 million. That’s a lot for the Padres to walk away from.

--Reserve infielder Alberto Gonzalez is an RBI machine. He had two more Friday night and has 16 on the season in just 114 at-bats – or an RBI every 7.1 at-bats. Over the course of a 500-at-bat season, that would be 70 RBI. The only Padre driving in runs at a higher rate than Gonzalez is Ryan Ludwick. Last season with Washington, Gonzalez had five RBI in 186 at-bats. His career-high is 33 in 2009 with the Nationals in 291 at-bats.
--1B Anthony Rizzo is 4-for-15 in his last four games. All four hits were doubles. He also reached base twice on walks and once when hit by a pitcher with five runs scored and an RBI.
--RF Will Venable is 3-for-8 with a homer, two walks, two RBI, three runs and a stolen base in two straight starts in right. Since returning from Triple-A Tucson on June 9, Venable has gone 8-for-23 and is 7-for-15 in four starts since last Saturday.
--2B Orlando Hudson has gone 8-for-19 with four walks, a homer, three RBI and five runs scored since returning from the disabled list on June 19.
--CF Cameron Maybin is 5-for-11 with a triple, three RBI and five runs scored in his last three games after enduring a 0-for-16 slump.
--The Padres hit for the cycle Friday night in the seventh inning against Atlanta –homer (Guzman), triple (Maybin), double (Ryan Ludwick) and single (Hudson).
