Bartlett invests in real estate

June 24--U.S. Rep. Roscoe Bartlett is investing in real estate again, purchasing eight new properties in 2010.

Bartlett, a Frederick Republican, reported on his annual financial disclosure this month that he had purchased the properties for a total amount of $580,007 to $1.3 million.

The annual financial disclosure forms are required by all members of Congress, but exact figures of wealth are not required. Instead, representatives may list ranges for the amount of transaction or total worth of their assets.

In his 2011 filing, Bartlett reported buying the eight properties, including one in Frederick -- at 1115 Providence Court. The forms state he bought three lots and two properties in Knoxville, as well as a property in Annapolis and a lot in Mount Pleasant.

It was an active year compared with his 2010 filing, in which Bartlett reported buying and selling no properties.

Spokeswoman Lisa Wright said Bartlett invested in the properties to rehabilitate them, which bumped him to a higher wealth category on the disclosure forms.

Bartlett's total investments are worth between $2,432,016 and $8,180,000, according to the latest disclosure.

The most costly property he purchased in 2010 was 122 Silopanna in Annapolis, which Bartlett reported cost him between $250,001 and $500,000.

The congressman held on to his other investment properties last year, choosing not to sell any of them. He now owns 13 investment properties, in addition to investments in precious metals, Putnam bonds and stock in Medical Dynamics Inc.

He is not required to report his principal residence or vacation homes that do not generate income.

Members of Congress are also required to report travel expenses that were paid for by outside groups totaling more than $335.

The only trip Bartlett listed on his disclosure form was a seven-day program in Madrid, sponsored by the Aspen Institute Congressional Program.

The name of the conference was "U.S.-Russia Relations: Policy Challenges for the Congress."

Bartlett and his wife, Ellen, attended together, and the Aspen Institute paid $9,053 for their travel, food and lodging expenses, according to a separate travel report. Bartlett flew either coach or business class, he said, and the hotel was $330 per night.
