Young golfer says Island can go the distance as a golfing destination

Golf Academy honours graduate Nathan Swan wants to see Bermuda build on its game.

“I’ve always thought Bermuda should have some sort of elite academy where people can sign on for intensive golf lessons,” the 22-year-old said. “I truly believe it’s possible here. We have the facilities and we have the setting for it.

“Would I like to be a part of something like that? Quite possibly, if the right people were involved. It’s difficult, because in Bermuda we have a lot of people who enjoy playing golf, but not so many involved in the business side.”

Since returning from the Golf Academy of America at Altamonte Springs in Orlando, Florida, Mr Swan has worked as an assistant at the Fairmont Southampton’s golf course. He is eagerly anticipating this month’s Bermuda Open, as well as the Grand Slam in October.

“I hope soon to move onto teaching, which is what I studied teaching golf and managing golf courses,” Mr Swan said. “Our director of golf here at the Fairmont, Anthony Mocklow, is very keen to develop golf in Bermuda, and not just here. And there are a lot of opportunities to get involved in golf in Bermuda.”

Mr Swan grew up in Somerset, where he played sports of all kinds. He credits his family for getting him motivated to take on golfing professionally.

“My parents got me started when I was seven, and I was doing junior golf by aged nine or ten,” he said. “But I hadn’t planned on golf as a career. My mother got me onto the Golf Academy, which gives you the business side as well as the game.”

Out of the Golf Academy’s graduating class of almost 90 students, Mr Swan was one of just five to get the President’s Award for overall excellence.

Currently he practises every day, preferring to avoid the repetition of driving ranges

“I’d say the Fairmont is my favourite. I love Port Royal. Belmont is very pretty, and the Mid-Ocean speaks for itself.

“I just think Bermuda has great opportunities to expand as a golfing destination and to really cater to people who play the game. Right now, with expanding golf in Bermuda, there’s the economy to consider. Golf can be expensive. I think ultimately what we need is to get more kids involved.
