Penna.'s Mabius turns to 'Outcasts'
What do you do when one of network TV's best shows is unceremoniously, and unjustly, killed?
Eric Mabius, who played America Ferrera's boss and confidant on ABC's Ugly Betty , needed strong medicine.
So, he flew to a galaxy far, far away. In other words, to British TV.
Mabius costars with Liam Cunningham ( Clash of the Titans ) and Hermione Norris ( MI-5 ) in BBC America's latest import from across the pond, Outcasts , which premieres Saturday at 9 p.m.
A sci-fi series set in 2040, the literate drama is about pioneers who leave a dying Earth to colonize the newly discovered planet of Carpathia.
"Everyone was very upset about Betty ending so abruptly," says Mabius, 40, a native of Marysville, Pa., a hamlet just north of Harrisburg. "And I was a bit soured on Hollywood, and [ Outcasts ] seemed a perfect way to get away."
And how. "I moved my family to South Africa where we did the principal shooting" on Outcasts for five months, says Mabius, who lives in Amherst, Mass., with his wife (and high school sweetheart), Ivy, and their two sons, Rylan, 21/2, and Maxfield, 5.
"We got to go to the World Cup too, which was amazing," Mabius adds.
The stark South African landscape adds an otherworldly flavor to Outcasts , which was created by MI-5 writer Ben Richards.
There's little else alien here: No little green men, giant arachnids, or chest-bursting Alien babies.
The intense, character-driven piece is less about the weird and wonderful stuff out there than about the often disturbing yet potentially wonderful world deep in the human psyche and in society.
The question Outcasts poses from its first scenes is this: Can we ever build a healthy, just society, or are we forever doomed to repeat our deadly mistakes?
Cunningham plays Richard Tate, the democratically elected president of Carpathia who has good intentions - and a lot of blood on his hands. He tries to keep the peace with the help of his security chief Stella Isen (Norris), but when his secrets are exposed, the fabric of society begins to break down.
Some of the danger comes from Mabius' strange, aggressively optimistic, and upbeat character, Julius Berger, who arrives at Carpathia in the pilot episode as part of a second wave of pioneers.
Berger was one of the men who planned Carpathia's colonization. During the five-year journey there, he evolved from bureaucrat to intensely charismatic, self-styled religious prophet.

The story mainly revolves around Dr. Lu Delgado and Dr. Dana Stowe, two women who have nothing in common with each other, except for their passions in the field of work. They work in the Rittenhouse Women's Health Clinic, where they face new challenges, and solve new problems from performing plastic surgery to treating HIV positive patients. This DVD set contains the first 22 episodes of Season 1, which are: Not only is this show moving, but you also learn something in each episode. Developed by Whoopi Goldberg and created by Tammy Ader, `Strong Medicine' has won numerous awards. Rosa Blasi (who plays Dr. Lu Delgado) won an Imagen Award for Best Actress in a Drama series. I doubt this DVD set will contain any special features, except for the standard ones like languages, and subtitles, but nevertheless, it is worth buying this DVD just to see the episodes.
