BMX Riders, Get Ready: Kingsbridge Armory May Become A Velodrome

This is actually a fairly good idea. Last I heard, there was still only one indoor velodrome in the US, and it's in California. They've been talking about putting one in Pennsylvania for years now, but nothing ever comes of it. Having one in NYC would make the city a destination for even more people. An indoor velodrome would allow riders to train and race year-round, as well as being a good venue if the city ever wants to try for a Summer Olympics again. Kissena, being outdoor with no roof, is unusable from November through March, plus any rainy days during the cycling season. The next closest velodrome in Lehigh Valley is also outdoor.

This really wouldn't be anything new. New York, via the previous Madison Square Garden, once had a grand and glorious history of indoor bicycle racing about 120 years ago. There were lots of velodromes, but the Six-Day race series culminated in Madison Square Garden, where the event was the equivalent of the Superbowl and the World Series rolled into one for the public of that era and attracted record audiences. And I never wrote anything at all about BMX bikes. I mentioned Kissena and Lehigh Valley and alluded to the Home Depot track, none of which have anything to do with BMX. Yep. A velodrome and a BMX course are two different things for two completely different types of bikes (a velodrome is for fixed-gear track bikes; BMX bikes are like what's in the picture above). There'd be plenty of room for both at the armory site, but they aren't at all the same thing.

Lehigh Valley Rapha Gentlemen's Race | Rapha

The third annual Rapha NE Gentlemen's Race took place on the 21st of May in the beautiful Lehigh Valley. Twenty teams approached the rolling hills of Western Pennsylvania knowing that the day would likely be a memorable day of riding.

On paper, the 135-mile Bill Strickland designed course looked challenging, but manageable. Turns out, this part of the country gives a whole other meaning to the phrase 'rolling hills'. The climbing seemed eternal, the descents far too short, the gravel brutal. To top it all off, there is a hill called Bake Oven Road where the "road" betters you coming and going with a unique mix of clay that sticks to your tires on the uphill and potholes larger than a man-hole on the way down.

Perfect ingredients for a successful Gentlemen's Race. Finishing ala Roubaix in the Lehigh Valley Velodrome, smiles prevailed over the hurting legs. Riding an additional 15-miles because of a wrong turn was soon forgotten by cold beer and shared misery in the form of satisfaction.

The winners were the trio of tandems from Boston called the 52 Vincents.
