Review: Offbeat coming-of-age 'Submarine' story floats sublimely Tom Long/ Detroit News Film CriticAt age 15, Oliver Tate has women problems.
One woman in question would be his normally subdued mother (Sally Hawkins), who seems to be growing bored of his even-more-subdued father (Lloyd Tate) now that a long-ago boyfriend (Paddy Considine) has moved into the neighborhood.
The other woman would be Jordana (Yasmin Paige), his recent girlfriend, who normally likes to do romantic things like burn the hair off Oliver's legs. But Jordana's mother is deathly ill, and two troubled mothers is one too many for the overwhelmed Oliver (Craig Roberts).
Offbeat, cheeky and touching, in the offbeat-cheeky-touching way of so many British coming-of-age stories, "Submarine" is nevertheless entertaining, and at times it's downright wonderful.
Directed by Richard Ayoade, who wrote the script based on a novel by Joe Dunthorne, with an eye for the odd turn that feels true, it manages to make the overworn anxieties of youth — romance, sex, parents, school, bullies — seem like fresh enough fodder for fun.
Ayoade has a keen sense of the oddly familiar. Oliver's dead fish of a marine biologist father somehow manages to be sympathetic at the same time his low-aiming mother is checking out her former beau, a pretentious would-be self-actualization guru.
They're all fairly sad people, but Ayoade avoids outright guffawing at them. Same with Oliver and Jordana: They're a pretty strange couple of kids, but Ayoade finds a real connection there, two tilted outlooks that mesh.
The result is a small, delicate comedy that depends on a continuity of tone that it pulls off. Oliver may not live happily ever after; but he manages to live happily enough here, and that's just fine.

&Nbsp;I so much enjoyed the story that Joanie told at our June meeting about her and Sheila's mother, Velma. Joanie had said that the winter before last her mother had become rather obsessed with making patchwork quilts out of velvet. She first started by making one, and then had some blocks left over. Well, there weren't quite enough blocks to make another quilt, so it was off to the thrift store in search of more of the precious velvet....and so this went on and on and on. One quilt leading into the next, and the next and the next. Many of the family members received these quilts. What a nice legacy to pass on to her famiy, and friends! Nice treasures and memories to hold on to! We are a guild of quilters that formed in May of 2003. We meet at 7:00 pm on the third Monday of each month at the Breed Community Building located on Hwy 32, north of Suring Wisconsin. We also have a sewing session at 1:30 pm on the first Monday of each month at the same community building. Quilting is our passion, we are dedicated to passing on our love of quilting and sharing with our community.
