Humboldt experiences firsthand art in park
HUMBOLDT - An artist is not paid for his labor but his vision, artist James Whistler once said.
At the sixth annual Humboldt Arts Festival Saturday, child and adult alike not only got to find local art, they also got to participate in its creation.
Thirty vendors participated in the event at Humboldt's John Brown Park.
"We have artisans from the area that are displaying their arts, and we are having the community take a look and buy their art and their wares, and getting the community more aware of art in the area," Susan Blanchard, events organizer for the Humboldt Arts Council, said.
One of those vendors was 12-year-old entrepreneur Kate Curran. At her booth, Curran sold crayon art and original, vibrant, flower-shaped pens.
"I melt old crayons into molds, and make pens out of duct tape," she said.
Curran was already doing well before noon.
"I've sold quite a few so far," she said.
Being at the festival was fun, Curran said, an event she had participated in before.
"I've sold my crayons before but this is the first time I've sold my pens."
Under a large canopy, there were 12 tables with different arts activities for kids to do, including creating soap foam scarves, marble mats, monoprints, Kandinsky paintings and nature prints. There was also a caricature artist, Duane Murray.
At nature print artist Candis Dreschler's table, kids transferred imprints of natural materials, like flowers and leaves, onto fabric using paint and hammers.
Dreschler has participated in the festival every year.
"It's just a really nice opportunity for kids and adults to come out and enjoy the arts, and do it firsthand," she said. "It's a very popular event here in town."
The activities tent was set up for 300 children. Every activity was free, except for the spin art.
"Until we've run 300 kids through there today, it's free," he said. "It will be a busy beehive of activity all day long," Arts Council board member Lisa Rasmussen said.
The purpose of the free family event is to create awareness of art in the community, Blanchard said.
"I think that art in people's lives is awesome," she said.
This is the fourth year the annual event has been held at John Brown Park. The first two festivals were held on Sumner Avenue. A focus of the event is the John Brown Park fountain, which is being restored, Rasmussen said.
"We are less than a month aware from it being finished," she said. "By next summer, we'll have water in the fountain again and be able to enjoy that.

Some exhibits spark imagination, like Flight Fantasy, where kids “do” things to cause movement. They crank air to lift feathers in a tube, run on a giant hamster wheel and, in the newest exhibit, launch foam rockets that they've designed.
Each session, kids will have time to tumble on the mats, play in the foam pit, and head outside for activities like blowing bubbles or bouncing balls. Whether inside or outside, each activity is designed to be enjoyable and educational.
Items included heart rate monitors and pedometers, dumbbells, fitness balls, rackets, mats, Speed Stacks, hula-hoops, a horizontal climbing wall, foam balance beam set and more. "Their instructional needs, in my opinion, are just as significant as the
