On Thursday afternoon, Constants drowned in the Severn River when her Club 420 sailboat capsized near the Naval Academy during a lesson with the Severn Sailing Association Junior Sailing Program. The Broadneck High sophomore-to-be was wearing a trapeze harness that got caught in the boat's rigging when it capsized. A counselor freed the girl and performed CPR until rescuers arrived.
She was wearing a personal flotation device, officials said.
Questions remain unanswered about the accident and the Natural Resources Police had not completed their investigation late yesterday.
But one thing is clear - the accident was a rare event in the sailing school industry in the Annapolis area.
A search of The Capital's archive found no stories about serious sailing school accidents, let alone a fatal one.
Those involved in the industry could not remember one either.
"I have been teaching sailing for 25 years," said Jay Kehoe, waterfront director at the Annapolis Yacht Club which has its own sailing school. "I have never seen anything like this at all."
Not only are sailing school fatalities rare, deaths associated with sailboats are rare as well.
U.S. Coast Guard 2010 boating accident statistics show of 672 total boating deaths only 3 percent were related to sailboats. There were eight deaths associated with sail-only craft and 15 for auxiliary sailboats, those with both sail and an engine.
'It's heartbreaking'Constants was remembered yesterday for her outgoing personality and sense of humor. She'd just completed her freshman year at Broadneck High. Friends called Constants an experienced sailor, but recalled her love for playing soccer and shopping. She loved sushi and would often want to head downtown with friends to get some. She was the new kid at the beginning of the year after transferring from Annapolis Area Christian School, but made fast friends after joining the soccer team.
Carey and McDaniel spent much of their time in the hours following her death crying their eyes out, Carey said. "She always lit up the room. It's heartbreaking.
"She was a very inviting person, no matter who you were," said McDaniel.
Constants met her boyfriend Will Snow, who just finished his freshman year at Severn School, at concert for rapper Mac Miller in March, he said. They had mutual friends at the concert and ended up talking all night.

They said Constants had nine weeks of high school sailing with three session per week. The high school sailing and more challenging youth sailing are both done on the Club 420, which is used by sailing schools, in part because of its versatility.
