Dr Oz Show Recap: Gary Taubes, Hiccups and Pills For Bad Habits

Dr Oz hosted Gary Taubes on the Dr. Oz Show today, which was a re-run from March. Gary Taubes sounds so much like Owen Wilson to me! It was very distracting. He kind-of looks like him too…did anyone else notice this?

Taubes is the author of “Why We Get Fat” and he claims that Doctor Oz and the medical community have it all wrong about why we are fat.

Taubes says that the biggest misconceptions practiced by doctors is 1) we get fat when we eat fat; and 2) we are fat because we eat too much and exercise too little.

Dr. Oz pointed out quickly that Gary Taubes is not a doctor and they segued into their first argument about carbohydrates. Taubes explained, very logically, that carbohydrates cause your body to make insulin and too much insulin is why we are fat. Meats and proteins do not raise insulin, so eating them instead of carbohydrates helps you lose weight because you have less insulin.

The only vegetables Gary Taubes says to eat are green vegetables. No fruit, pasta, bread, etc.

Dr. Oz got very excited because all those beautiful colored fruits and whole grain pastas are fundamental building blocks of health to him. He wonders if it would be better to be overweight and eating healthy foods versus skinny and eating fatty meats.

For argument number two, Gary Taubes says that all fats are good. He says the fat in steak and cheeseburgers and even lard is the same composition as that in olive oil: oleanolic acid. Taubes does not think saturated fats are all that bad for you.

Dr. Oz got very excited again and preached about how people who eat saturated fat end up on his operating table. Then he showed a video of himself trying out Taubes’ diet. He felt ill eating that food. Then he challenged Taubes to get his cholesterol levels checked. Taubes refuses though, which is kind of scary.

3 Colors Your Body Should Never Turn

Blue: Your nails should never turn blue or it could mean you have heart and/or lung disease.

Yellow: You should never see any yellow patches under your eyes or you could have high cholesterol levels.

Orange: If your skin has an orange tint to it, you might have hypothyroidism.

Hiccups

The diaphragm is the organ responsible for making hiccups. It sits under the lungs and when the brain crosses signals with the windpipe, you get hiccups. Drinking too much, eating too much can cause this to happen; even getting excited can do it.

Hiccups are usually not anything to be concerned about, but if hiccups last 48 hours then you need to see a doctor. For short-term hiccups, some Dr. Oz home remedies are to hold your breath, or gargle with ice cold water for 45 seconds.

How To Cure Bad Breath Naturally – Any Simple Home Remedy?

If brushing your teeth and tongue aren’t helping along with a good swish with a strong mouth rinse, you may need to reconsider your diet. Do you eat a lot of garlic or spicy foods? Do you eat a lot of junk food? These things may contribute to your bad breath and you may need to change your diet for a week or so to see if it is diet. If it isn’t, check with your dentist or even your doctor because you may have an overgrowth of bacteria that may, or may not, need to be taken care of. Until then, chew lots of minty-fresh gum!

All fruit and vegetable juices are beneficial in the treatment of halitosis and should be taken liberally by those suffering from this disorder. Juices from green vegetables are especially valuable.
