To skate or not to skate?
Wednesday June 22, 2011BRATTLEBORO -- Brattleboro residents who live near the proposed site of a new public skate park made their case against the project at the Development Review Board meeting Monday evening. They spoke mainly of their shared concern that the skate park would make too much noise.
"I'm excited for Brattleboro to have skate park. I have been concerned, ever since I heard about this location, with the suitability of this location," said Brandt Kurowski, who lives on Union Street. Many people residing in Brandt's neighborhood echoed his concerns.
After a brief presentation and more than an hour of testimony from the public, the DRB ultimately tabled the discussion until its meeting next month, when they will conduct a site visit.
The discussion about the proposed skate park came about because members of the town ad hoc committee BASIC (Brattleboro Area Skatepark Is Coming) and town Recreation and Parks Director Carol Lolatte came before the review board with a request for site plan approval and a conditional use permit.
The site in question is a 12,000 square-foot area located on the western edge of the Crowell Lot at 20 Western Avenue.
The skate park would feature ramps, stairs, rails and a bowl. The park would feature amenities to accommodate not just skateboarders but inline skaters, bicyclists and pedestrians as well, according to BASIC's application.
Adam Hubbard, a member of BASIC and an employee of Stevens & Associates, a Brattleboro engineering, planning and landscape architect firm, led a presentation about the project.
Though he has only been involved with BASIC for a year and a half, Hubbard acknowledged that skating enthusiasts have been advocating for a park and coming up against opposition and a multitude of other difficulties for nearly 20 years.
Hubbard explained that the Brattleboro school district has negotiated a lease with the town, which the Selectboard has been reviewing incrementally.
The Crowell Lot already has a lighted basketball court, an informal baseball diamond, and play structures for children. Students at near-by Green Street School often utilize the space after school and during recess. In many ways it is the ideal skate park, Hubbard said.
"It's level, it's accessible, close to town and relatively isolated from residential development, though there are some residences close to it," he said.
"It's located on the public bus line," he added.
Oak Board Fence - News
In an action at the OID Board of Directors regular meeting on June 21, the board voted 4-0, with director Frank Clark absent, to install a 350 linear feet, six-foot high chain link fence on the east side of the OID property bordering the Live Oak Plaza
Another 50 +/- trees were down in the SW Wirth area which caused some damage to the retaining wall and split rail fence along the parkway. Another 20-30 trees were down in the EBWG entry road, along the trail toward the spring and toward Glenwood.
This week, Orange County School Board officials stood behind their background-check process. They said Bradshaw is a good fit for the job and has been doing well while working as an administrator for Orange County schools for the past 10 months.
"Right now there is a decent amount of litter; the one garbage can is often overflowing," said Ken Nickolai, who lives on Oak Street. "I've been going there for six and a half years, and the water fountain has been broken the entire time," Nickolai

Our Fence Needs Work, Should We Remove It Before Putting Our Home ...
Q: We have a 58-acre farm with farm house built in 1898, stable, dairy barn and large equipment barn. For the last 25 years the property has been set up as horse property with four board painted white oak fencing surrounding the property, as well as designating paths and pastures. There’s a tremendous amount of it and the paint is peeling badly. We are older and cannot physically re-paint the fencing ourselves, nor can we afford to have someone else do it. We were thinking of removing the fencing prior to putting the property on the market but are not sure if we should. Some people may need to see the fencing to invision the horse property, others would be turned off by it from the peeling paint. The rest of the property and outbuildings are in good shape and the house has been nicely remodeled within the last two years. Any suggestions? Thank you. George Szkup is a Realtor® in Tucson, AZ.
A: I would absolutely leave the fence in . Not only will it help prospective buyers envision the property as horse property as you have indicated, it will also give buyers a prospective on how large the property is and the extent of its boundaries.
In addition, it will most likely be much cheaper for the new owners to repair the fence rather than replace it. The peeling paint is a maintenance issue while the lack of a fence may be perceived as something much worse. strong>A: If the fence is in good condition and just needs painting I would leave the fence and may offer a paint allowance for the fence or use it as a negotiating tool. Some people may not even question the fence. I would get an estimate for the fence painting.
