A lo largo de la historia del automóvil deportivo han pasado muchísimos modelos exitosos y reconocidos. Sin embargo, algunos lograron convertirse en referentes del segmento por sus particularidades. Entre los más destacados aparecen Ferrari Testarossa, Lamborghini Diablo y Porsche 911 con sus carrocerías musculosas.
En tanto, algunas versiones deportivas Gran Turismo clásicas, aun sin tantos volúmenes de ventas, han marcado a fuego a este tipo de estética en el ámbito europeo debido a la resolución de sus formas exteriores. En este caso, surgen como ejemplos los modelos británicos Aston Martin DB2 Vantage (1950 y 2010), Jaguar E-Type (1966) y XKR más los italianos Alfa Romeo Spider 1966 de Pininfarina y Fiat Coupé.
En este rubro, también hay que reconocer los aportes que llegaron desde Oriente. La creación de Nissan 350Z -ahora 370Z- tuvo enorme éxito comercial, incluso en Estados Unidos, por su excelente equilibrio entre precio y prestaciones, además de poseer una silueta única.
Se suman a la lista el logrado cupé Hyundai Genesis (reconocido en Estados Unidos por su diseño, incluso sobre BMW Serie 3 Coupé); Mitsubishi Eclipse con sus sucesivas reediciones; Mazda Miata, pequeña pero polivalente y mundialmente reconocida spider; y el soberbio Honda NSX, furor por su calidad interior e imagen dinámica exterior en los ´90.
En Norteamérica, las menciones obligadas son para: Ford Mustang, en sus primeras y últimas ediciones prescindiendo de las de final del siglo pasado (olvidables); Chevrolet Corvette (con el modelo C1 de 1954, Roadster de 1958 y la versión de 1984 que obtuvo el Premio Americano al Diseño), y Dodge Viper, un biposto de Chrysler creado para competir con Corvette.
Cuestión de proporciones. Además de serlo, muchos deportivos deben parecerlo. Así es como los autos que poseen motor delantero lo hacen más que evidente con sus proporciones marcadas en exceso. El espacio para el habitáculo, normalmente para dos personas, y la cola del auto ocupan muy pocos centímetros en comparación con la zona delantera, algo que se evidencia en Dodge Viper y en Chevrolet Corvette Stingray.
Desde el exterior, también se puede apreciar la localización baja de los asientos y las líneas de cintura relativamente altas que esgrimen.
Es que los centros de gravedad, bajísimos, obligan a que el auto sea muy acotado en altura.
Sin embargo, el estilo que detenta este tipo de unidades ha ido variando, evolucionando y, a veces, involucionando, según cada marca.
