Top lead-up for Tigers
IF recent training sessions are anything to go by, the Tassie Tigers are set for an exciting National League campaign.
Australian stars Eddie Ockenden and Luke Doerner, who are playing club hockey in Hobart, were joined for the latest training run by fellow Kookaburra Tim Deavin, Geoff Cock, Phil Marshall and Patrick Ward and the result pleased coach Glenn Freeman.
"The level of intensity during training is just amazing," Freeman said.
Doerner, a former Victorian, is the only major signing for the Tigers, but Freeman said his experience and knowledge would be a major boost for his team at the defensive end.
"Our young defenders are going to gain a lot of confidence from him being back there," he said.
The Tigers head to Canberra on Thursday for a gruelling weekend with matches against Victoria on Friday evening, NSW on Saturday and the ACT on Sunday.
Freeman said despite an interrupted preparation he was happy with the way the team had taken shape.
Doerner and Ockenden were late arrivals after playing in The Netherlands, Patrick Ward is now based in Melbourne while Browne, Phil Marshall, Tim Deavin and Geoff Cock are all in Perth.
"It has been difficult but with the squad we've had in Hobart the training has been excellent," Freeman said.
"It's been hard, very much match orientated. We're getting to the situation where we're putting the players under a lot of physical and mental pressure."
Freeman said he was delighted with the solid dose of young players in the team.
He is confident Doerner can be a heavy scorer for the team with his drag flicking from penalty corners but believes the strength of the team will be its versatility.
"We have players who can move across the lines very comfortably, and that is very important if we run into injuries," he said.
"My object as coach is to make the four. I have every confidence in the group."
Former Tigers player Ollie Close will be Freeman's assistant coach. The Tigers' only home appearance for the season is a doubleheader against defending champions Queensland and the Northern Territory on June 25-26.
The team is: Nick Tremayne (captain), Nathan Fitzpatrick, Patrick Ward, Luke Doerner, Billy Shaw, Nick Budgeon, Jeremy Edwards, Eddie Ockenden, Tim Deavin, Phil Marshall, James Bourke, Will Lawler, Geoff Cock, Dougal Middleton, Sam McCambridge, Kieron Arthur, Paul Ancher and Ben Read.
