Vans Warped Tour founder opens window into the business
Here’s a typical tour day for Kevin Lyman, founder of the youth-music juggernaut known as the Vans Warped Tour.He wakes up at 6 a.m. to see the sunrise. Then he checks on his people – the drivers of 45 tour buses, 19 semi-trucks and the caravan of “assorted vans and wagons” trekking through 44 dates till mid-August.
After he confirms that all’s well, he sits down to write the day’s schedule, then gets up to “make the rounds” – check in with the promoter, see the accountant and answer the crew’s questions until door time, at which point he helps let the kids in.
After that, it’s back into the bus to do business. He handles matters for his L.A.-based label, SideOneDummy Records, and there are his other tours: the soon-to-be-concluding Willie Nelson’s Country Throwdown Tour and the late-summer Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival.
This year he hopes to carve out some afternoon time for himself, fully trusting his staff and the well-oiled machine that is Warped, now in its 17th year of punk and metal goodness.
Maybe he’ll go golfing while in Las Cruces.
To hear him tell it – over the phone from Yosemite Park, where he was visiting with his family nine days before tour kick-off – his life is an even mix of sweat and rest. Here’s his take on this year’s big date.
Q. Vans Warped Tour prides itself on finding rising artists before they get big. Of the 70-plus acts, who are some to look out for this year?
The lineup I think is extremely diverse this year, and I think there are some great hidden gems there for kids. Bad Rabbits, I think, is a fantastically cool band. Sharks are a cool band. I think this little band Grieves With Budo might not be so well known, or Big Chocolate is another one. I’m going to the smaller stages. I think the kids know Foxy Shazam, but people seem really exited about that. The BOTS are two young brothers who are amazing.
Q. How do tickets at Las Cruces sell? Do you break even?
Yeah, within a few hundred tickets. We went down a few years ago, right when less of the kids (from Mexico) were willing to cross the border because of the trouble down there; we saw it drop by a few hundred people. That date usually sells right around 7,000 people.
Q. How are ticket sales comparing to last year?
We’re tracking 1.7 percent up ahead of last year. Maybe we’ll sell a few more hundred tickets than last year.
