PATOOT to celebrate ninth year Saturday
Peterson residents who have already celebrated with the Wednesday lunch they provided to over 400 participants in WHO's "Great Iowa Tractor Ride" plan to continue with the slow-moving festivities Saturday, during their town's ninth annual PATOOT ride.Peterson's Annual Trip On Old Tractors (PATOOT) ride was initiated in 2003 as a way to raise money for the town's sesquicentennial celebration held in August 2006. The town celebration has carried on since Peterson's 150th birthday party and turned into an annual community event and tractor ride -- featuring antique and modern alike -- in which proceeds raised have been "banked" until another specific community project is decided on.
This year's gathering, scheduled on June 25, will officially begin with a 7:30 a.m. five- and 10-kilometer walk or run. Proceeds will support the Sioux Central cross country program.
Following Saturday's walk and run, this summer's PATOOT ride will begin at 9:30 a.m. The ninth annual ride, which draws tractors and farm implement enthusiasts of all ages to the northwest Iowa town of 334 residents, will proceed from Main Street, with registration to occur one hour prior.
This year's PATOOT ride will feature the John Deere tractor.
The commemorative T-shirt and matching magnet calling attention to the 2011 PATOOT-centered festivities feature a John Deere Model 60 tractor restored by area service club members for the town's sesquicentennial and raffled off. Travis Anderson of Peterson, who won the tractor, sold the antique to its current owner, his father, Jon Anderson of Peterson.
The tractor route, which changes every year, will travel scenic byways in Clay and Buena Vista counties. It will trek north and east of Peterson this year before heading south to Linn Grove, with a rest stop planned at the Linn Grove dam.
For those not riding tractors, wagon rides along the same route will also be available for a nominal fee. Registration for PATOOT wagon rides will occur between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m. Saturday on Peterson's Main Street.
Lunch, which will be served from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. in Peterson's Community Legion Hall, will feature a shredded pork loin sandwich, baked beans, chips and ice cream.
In addition to the tractors displayed on Main Street following the ride, local businesses will remain open Saturday.
