Owner Beverly Welch says customers are also buying a lot of compost, organic fertilizer, expanded shale and other moisture retention products. Customers are spending less, meanwhile, on plants that can't take the heat.
Facing day after day of extremely hot and dry weather, local consumers have gone into survival mode — buying items to keep their yards alive without spiking their water bills, and stay cool inside without driving up electric bills.
Window air-conditioning units, ceiling fans and energy-saving materials are strong sellers at hardware stores. At least one company offering sprinkler systems is seeing record sales.
At the Home Depots in the Houston area, sales of air-conditioning units for windows and ceiling and stand-alone fans have been strong, as has attic insulation, which helps reduce heat in homes, company spokesman Craig Fischel said.
For lawns, Home Depot is selling large numbers of low-flow hose nozzles and low-flow sprinkler heads to help cut water usage, Fischel said.
Houston-area Lowe's stores are offering a variety of ceiling fans and weatherization products to help do-it-yourselfers save on energy costs, company spokeswoman Jaclyn Pardini said. Such energy-saving materials include insulation, weatherstripping, spray foam and caulk.
More sprinkler repairsAt CBS Services, the sprinkler installation and repair business - the company's focus - has been particularly strong in recent months, said David Bird, the Spring-based company's business development manager. Spring is the busiest time for sprinkler installation, he noted.
His sprinkler repair business is up, too. Last Thursday he planned to do about 40 sprinkler repairs and on the same day a year ago his company did less than 25, he said.
The increase is drought-related, he said, because anyone with a non-working sprinkler systems feels a need to fix it: "The hotter it is, the less fun it is to go out and hand-water your lawn.
