Cutting edge couture
Jackson Hole, Wyo.-Thirty-year-old Jackson native Abbie Miller approaches clothing design from a decidedly art-making background. With an MFA in fiber and a penchant for abstract expressionistic fabric sculptures, Miller’s foray into making clothes is conceptual as well as practical. She recently launched AM Renegade, a clothing line based on the principles of sculpture. Jacksonites may be familiar with Miller’s “upcycled” garments made of used material and given a sculptural boost. At a one-day pop-up store this winter in the old Cloudveil space, Heidi Ramseur was smitten with Miller’s stretchy teal tube dress with armholes centered in the middle of the garment rather than on the side. Because the fabric has to stretch so much when the dress is worn, a unique drape is achieved. The top of the dress can be used as a hood or as an elegant neckline. Miller’s new line, which will enjoy its first public showing at CLAD, features a new version of the tube dress, with a more stretch material and larger arm holes. Another key piece is “the square dress,” a simple cotton twill sheath with batwing sleeves. “The basic idea was to be symmetrical on the vertical and horizontal lines,” she said. “But I extended it on one end to make a dress.” Miller was inspired to create clothes she would want to wear. She’s calling the line “Nomad,” based on recent travels in the U.S. and abroad. While traveling she found herself taking hundreds of photos of urban construction sites. She was drawn to the juxtaposition of colors: the charcoal grey of asphalt and green of mesh netting protecting a worksite peppered with caution colors like the flame orange of construction cones. Grimes earned a BFA in Fiber from Western Washington University. Her mother is an expert seamstress, and Grimes grew up traveling to art fairs with her mom. She started making her own line of clothing while living in Seattle, where she worked in a high-end fabric shop and learned from the master seamstresses there. She and her husband moved to Jackson three years ago. Her happy accident for this line was a linen dress of red, black and cream floral pattern. Unsatisfied with her original shoulder straps for this sleeveless dress, she turned to a material she considers an old friend, grosgrain ribbon. Now the dress has a T-strap in a brilliant red grosgrain. The ribbon became the structural background for a number of garments in the line. How To Stretch Shrunken Silk - News
And we're not talking the Columbia Pictures shrunken logo lady. Grimes makes clothes for women who want to show off their curves. Thirty-six-year-old Grimes calls herself “a bigger girl” – meaning she is voluptuous in a healthy, appealing way.

Jefferson, who as minister to France had himself painted in 1786 in a daintily curled wig, striped silk waistcoat, and dandified ruffled shirt, with a matching expression of supercilious foppery worthy of any ancien-régime aristo, did run his own
