In Honor of World Oceans Day, West Marine Awards $30000 in Marine Conservation ...

The funds will be used to work with PenderWatch to build 12 oyster reefs to stabilize an important but badly eroding island near Hamsptead, North Carolina. The site is now closed due to pollution from storm water runoff. Working with PenderWatch, a local non-profit, 2,000 bushels of oyster shells will be put in the water to help jump start new, bigger natural oyster reefs, which will rejuvenate the waters.  For more information visit   The Project is dedicated to promoting the catch, tag and release of Atlantic tunas within the recreational fishing sector.  Atlantic bluefin and yellowfin tuna are under incredible pressure.  The recreational sector can play a vital role in contributing to the overall knowledge base by adopting a tag and release culture. Collecting data on the tuna that recreational fishermen catch is critical.  To date NOAA has little data coming about these tuna populations.   CBF is the only conservation organization dedicated solely to the restoration and protection of the Chesapeake Bay and its rivers and streams. The funds will support a partnership with the Maryland Saltwater Sportsfishermen's Association from Dorchester County to enhance the native oyster population and increase available fish habitat in the Choptank River, a tributary of the Chesapeake Bay. MSSA will construct 66 reef balls with help from citizen volunteers in Cambridge, Maryland. CBF will transport the reef balls to their oyster restoration facility in Shadyside, Maryland to grow oyster spat (juvenile oysters) on the reef balls. Once these tiny oysters have grown to approximately the size of a fingernail, the oyster-set reef balls will be transplanted onto Cook's Point reef - an existing oyster sanctuary in the Choptank River.  For more on these organizations visit Funds will support the Community-Based Restoration Program (CBR) and will help to restore and enhance vital San Francisco Bay tidal marsh habitat.  Thousands of local residents, including West Marine Customers and Associates can play a significant part in 225 community-based restoration projects including 6 shoreline sites.  To get involved visit

Marine Conservation Grants are awarded through a formal application process in which interested organizations must submit their proposal directly to West Marine.  All applications are reviewed by the Marine Conservation Action Team. Those applying must show sound financial policies and management with a key focus in marine conservation, habitat restoration and sustainable fisheries. These activities may cover water clean-up, habitat protection and restoration, ocean science and conservation projects that relate to key marine species, water quality, sustainable ocean use, etc.

Grants for Installing Solar Panels | Eco Alternative Energy

Businesses , non-profit organizations, government facilities and homeowners can get state and federal grants for installing solar panels . The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) allocated funding to states to promote renewable energy and energy efficiency–much of which ended up at local utility companies. Consumers can apply for this money in the form of rebates, loans, grants and tax rebates from local utilities.

The term “grants” often loosely describes “rebates” and “tax credits” interchangeably. Although a grant may not be obviously available in your state, a sizable rebate, tax credit or loan may be offered. Check with your local utility company.

The Maryland Energy Administration (MEA) provides grants to businesses to install photovoltaic solar panel systems. The MEA also offers a solar grant to homeowners. Limited funding is available. Businesses and non-profit organizations should apply before October for grants in the coming year.

To be eligible, the solar system must be between 20 and 200 kilowatts. The maximum grant is $50,000.

Applicants must: (1) Complete the Pre-qualification Form, Application Form, Maryland Historical Trust Review Form and Photovoltaic Application; (2) Review the Mid-Size Solar Grant Program Terms & Conditions and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Addendum; (3) Obtain a cost estimate from the installer, an itemized list of components, a site plan and a shading analysis.

Business and non-profit applicants must show that their installation is in compliance with the Davis-Bacon Act.

The Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation awards grants of up to $10,000 to install a photovoltaic system in K-12 schools or other children’s educational facilities. The installations give students a hands-on opportunity to understand solar power. According to the foundation’s website, the students get “real-time data on the amount of electricity generated by the photovoltaic system at each solar school .” Applicants should read the 2010 Small-Scale Solar PV Program K-12 Brochure and complete an application form.

U.S. business taxpayers can get a federal grant of 30 percent for installing a photovoltaic system. See IRS Form 3468 for details. According to nytimes.com, “the federal government offered the option of a 30 percent upfront grant instead of the tax credit, as part of the 2009 recovery act.
