DONNY & MARIE NEW CD A HIT Donny and Marie Osmond's new country music CD, simply titled, "Donny & Marie," is their first album together in 30 years, and it's a hit. Donny, 53, tells The Boot, "It's the highest ranking for an Donny and Marie album in our entire career." The record debuted at #7 on the country chart, #30 on the Top 40 album chart and #1 on the folk album chart. The CD features songs written by such veterans as Carole King, Carole Bayer Sager, David Foster and Richard Marx as well as Bon Jovi guitarist Ritchie Sambora, who plays on the album. Also contributing songs are journeymen country music pensmiths Frank Myers and Gary Baker (their "Once in a Lifetime" was #1 for Alabama in 1993, and "I Swear" for John Michael Montgomery was Country Song of the Year in 1994), and Walt Aldridge, whose #1 country hits include "(There's No) Getting Over Me" in 1981 for Ronnie Milsap, "Holding Her and Loving You," by Earl Thomas Conley in 1982, and "Modern Day Bonnie and Clyde" for Travis Tritt in 2000.

Marie has accumulated five #1 country albums and singles dating to her "Paper Roses" debut in 1973. As a solo artist and with his brothers as The Osmonds, Donny has sold more than 80 million records. As a duo, Donny and Marie's two singles, "I'm Leaving it Up to You" and "Morning Side of the Mountain," from 1974, each hit #1 on the adult contemporary chart.

SARAH McLACHLAN'S CONFESSION Two-time Grammy winner and co-founder of the traveling all-female music fest known as the Lilith Fair, Sarah McLachlan, tells Spinner that the effect divorce had on her was so devastating that at one point she wasn't sure if she'd ever make music or be able to perform live again. The 43-year-old Canadian songstress who has sold more than 40 million records since 1988, married her drummer Ashwin Sood in 1997. The couple, who have two daughters, separated 11 years later. "Coming to terms with the fact that my marriage was a failure was devastating," she said. Regarding her songwriting and performing, she said, "It did take me a long while to be able to write again because I was just too far down a deep, dark hole to do anything. I had to crawl back up." She added, "It took me a long time to get over it. (But) I have-two kids so I just got out of bed and kept moving forward."

She still isn't ready to move on romantically. She concludes, "I honestly can't imagine dating anybody right now. I think I'm going to be a single mom for a long time." McLachlan won the 1998 Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal for her pop ballad, "Building a Mystery," that hit #1 in Canada and #2 here. She is playing a handful of dates throughout the U.S. and Canada over the next couple months, including two nights at the Hollywood Bowl, July 15-16.
