239 tires pulled from Quinebaug

It's been more than four decades since images of the burning Cuyahoga River in Ohio sparked a nationwide call to arms among environmental activists that would lead to the federal Clean Water Act of 1972 and a steady improvement in the quality of streams.

Volunteer stewardship groups have since mushroomed across the state, region and country to keep the pulse of river and stream quality.

So imagine the surprise and dismay Friday when 30 volunteers from Massachusetts and Connecticut plucked 239 tires — some still mounted on rusted rims — from a 150-yard stretch of the Quinebaug River, just north of the Route 205 bridge in Wauregan, Conn.

The cleanup was organized by the Danielson-based The Last Green Valley Inc., a private nonprofit established “to preserve the irreplaceable land, water, and cultural resources of the region,” according to the group's website.

Glenn E. Krevosky of Oxford, environmental consultant and longtime activist in the cleanup of the French River, was among those present Friday to help with the monumental cleanup task.

After a cursory examination of the tires, Mr. Krevosky characterized the dumping as something of an anomaly given the exceptional clarity of the Quinebaug River water, the minimal amount of trash and other debris pulled from that stretch of the river, very little buildup of algae on the tires, and not much sand inside them.

“Only about four or five tires had been there for any length of time. It appeared that 95 percent had likely been dumped at one time, or a couple of times in close succession either last fall or this spring,” the environmentalist said.

Mr. Krevosky said he spoke with personnel from Empire Tire of Plainfield who stated that illegal dumping of tires had been a significant problem in northeastern Connecticut.

According to Bill Reid, director of external affairs for The Last Green Valley, Empire Tire removed all the recovered tires at its own expense to be recycled.

Mr. Reid said the volunteers were dismayed because that section of river is “one of the most bucolic stretches of the Quinebaug, from the Massachusetts border to Norwich.”

“There's not a whole lot of development along this stretch and in 2009, as part of our Source to Sea Program, this section of the stream was dedicated as a river trail,” he said.
