Resident Creates Board Game

Potomac resident Curtis Paul designs games and toys as a second career to real estate and has invented a new award-winning board-game called Katatu, which will be available in local Maryland stores this month.

Katatu recently won Creative Child Magazine’s "2011 Preferred Choice Award" for board games, which was voted on by parents, educators, and special needs educators among hundreds of games over a weekend.

"The Preferred Choice Award through Creative Child Magazine is a finalist award. The game competed well and rated very high among other games in the board games category," said Diane Morse, the awards program coordinator at Creative Child Magazine.

Katatu is based upon an ancient game that originated in the Roman Empire, evolved through Europe and eventually flowed into the country of Namibia in southern Africa. Locals refer to the game as katatu which means three. Inspired by this age-old game, Paul made modifications and created a spider-web look to the game board, using playing pieces that imitate "real bugs" such as grasshoppers and bees. The game is portable, has magnetic game pieces, a "bug pouch" and plays on average in just 15 minutes.

Paul has been involved in games and toys for many years and was inspired to start his Maryland-based company, Curtlin Toys and Games because he felt there was a "void in the game market." The first game Paul created was XTreme Takeover, a battle strategy game geared for boys, which sold 5,000 copies in 2010. "I really wanted to make another game after Takeover that would have better mass appeal that both boys and girls, and parents would enjoy, and most importantly be educational, 100 percent strategy and not use dice," said Paul.

"Varations of the (katatu) game have been taught to children for over 3,000 years in places such as Egypt and Africa. Fathers that were goat-herders would teach their sons this game since you have to keep your eyes on everything," said Paul, describing the game as very strategic.

The main object of the game is to eliminate one’s opponent by getting "three in a row" in a variety of directions. Building upon strategy, the game helps young children learn about counting and simple decision-making. For older youths, it aids in developing spatial abilities and relationships.

"Katatu is such a great game since it has so many levels of strategy.
