Green "T": Dry Cleaning Dangers
Perks, they are everywhere.
Sign up for a credit card, discounts abound. Buy a pair of shoes, get a second half off. You can even join online groups and get daily perks. These are all good perks.
But I am here to tell you about a bad perk, I mean PERC. Perchloroethylene.
As far as chemicals go, this is a bad one (the EPA has classified it as a human cancer causing chemical; say that three times fast!) and it is lurking in your closet. PERC is the main chemical used in traditional dry cleaning that makes your clothes look all dandy. But every time you open the door to grab a fresh outfit, out puffs more PERC right into the air you are breathing.
Not so fresh.
And those plastic bags your clothes come back to you in, ditch them right away! They seal in the PERC and are made of their very own yuckiness. Better yet, if you need to dry clean your skirts, purchase a few cotton garment bags to drop off with your pile of cleaning. That way you will be eliminating a need for all those plastic, throw away bags and letting your clothes air out as well. To further cut down on this toxic chemical making its way into your home, hang your newly, cleaned clothing on your porch or in the garage when you first pick them up. The off gassing will happen out in the open instead of in the confines of your closet.
The federal Environmental Protection Agency has ordered a phase out of PERC machines in residential buildings by 2020. Although it is a step in the right direction, dry cleaners in apartment buildings only account for a very small amount of the total number of businesses in our country. Leading by example, once again, California will eliminate the use of PERC by 2020.
So what are the alternatives you ask?
Well, there is always the old fashioned way: hand washing. Not only does this guarantee a kinder environment but it will save you tons of money. I know there are items in your closet that say “Dry Clean Only.” I have them as well, and my husband’s suits will still be dropped off. But here are some tips on other items you can easily handle at home.
Wool/Cashmere can be gently hand washed right in your kitchen sink with a little castile soap or even Woolite. Add a dash of distilled vinegar to the rinse water, then press the water out of the garment. Be careful not to twist or wring fabric. Lay flat to dry, stretching to original shape. Avoid the sun when drying, as it can fade your favorite sweater.
