Natural gas is methane (CH4), consisting of a central carbon atom surrounded by four hydrogen atoms. The density of methane is half that of air (Darley, 18). Methane is often found together with petroleum oil and other hydrocarbon wet gases such as

Several years ago, journalists and testers road vehicles used to talk about "kitchen engines." At the time I realized it was a term describing the performance of the device, but I was not sure if this is related to high performance, the engine very responsive or just a pretty standard, the unit submissive recalls a kitchen stove, the term meant nothing to me. Today, of course, with increasing awareness of energy security and global warming, any engine described as "kitchen" must surely be the last, and the fuel-fed, which is distributed in the territory directly in our kitchens - natural gas.

Composed primarily of methane and small amounts of saturated higher (ethane, butane, and so on) in collaboration with "inert" (mainly nitrogen but also carbon dioxide), natural gas is found in many parts of the world in depth. In its raw state, the gas may also contain water, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and some higher hydrocarbons, but they must be removed before transport to avoid condensation in the higher pressures or prevent corrosion in pipelines.

When using the fuel in a gas main concern is that the Wobbe Index gas. "Defined as the calorific value of gas volume divided by the square of its density, natural gas is sold to domestic users on this basis. Used in an engine, however, it is not entirely relevant. For an engine of our main concern is the octane requirement or, more precisely, the compression ratio of the air-gas mixture can withstand before spontaneous combustion.

While the octane of the main constituent, methane, is extremely high (about 130 RON, MON 122) those of the possible presence of contaminants (ethane, propane and butane) can be considerably less. The motor octane number for ethane is 101, while those for propane and butane are 96 and 89 respectively. Therefore, for use in an engine, as pure methane, the better.

Even in its purest form, however, natural gas, including almost 100% methane has other issues, including two laminar flame speed and lean flammability relatively poor. The fact that methane can be easily seen bubbling through the decaying vegetation in ponds and reed beds suggests that it is a relatively stable molecule, are not readily react chemically with other components in the natural world.Similarly it is difficult to ignite, and even when, finally, burning in the combustion chamber of an engine flame speed can sometimes be significantly slower than gasoline, especially when running rich. Thus, while the anti-rattle potential is great, the ability to extract that performance is compromised by its combustion characteristics.
