Hundreds gather for Virginia Garcia Cornelius Wellness Center groundbreaking

Virginia Garcia's Cornelius Wellness Center will be across the street from the original clinic, but architectural renderings show a facility worlds apart from the three-car garage where the clinic began.   

"The exam rooms didn't go all the way to the ceiling," said Greg Mecklem, 65, a doctor who worked in the clinic when it opened in 1975. "The only bathroom in the place was in the back, were we did all the charting. It was chaotic."

The wellness center of the future boasts a community garden, green roof and solar energy. It will have exercise space, a community kitchen and large group meeting rooms. Best of all, the 42,000-square-foot facility will be five times the size of the current clinic in a converted house, and 70 times as big as that garage where it all started.

More than 450 Virginia Garcia staff, community leaders and citizens gathered Friday in the vacant lot outside the existing clinic to celebrate the next era of a health center whose mission has always been access for all.

Virginia Garcia 's four area clinics are the only federally qualified health centers in Washington and Yamhill counties. About 80 percent of their 34,000 patients live below the federal poverty line. Most of them are also uninsured or underinsured.

Most of the $13.7 million to build the wellness center comes from a $12 million Health Resources and Service Administration grant. Smaller grants and private donations will pay for the rest.

The existing clinic site -- a converted house across the street from the old garage -- is long overdue for an update.

As Virginia Garcia has grown, so has its customer base. The Cornelius clinic serves 6,000 patients yearly, but space is limited inside the house. Staff cope by conducting eye exams on the backs of hallway doors, and using rooms as part office, part exam room.

Newer clinics throughout Washington County and in McMinnville help the Virginia Garcia organization serve 34,000 patients yearly. The new wellness center is expected to push Virginia Garcia's customer base to nearly 40,000.

Staff say it's a much-needed next phase in the organization's evolution.

Cornelius city leaders hope it will help the town evolve, too . It'll be Cornelius' first three-story building.
