Eau Claire Library getting 50 iPads for public use
Using a $50,000 grant from the Presto Foundation, the library told WEAU 13 News on Monday that it will spend the summer filling up 50 new iPads with books and other media.
“The iPad will be loaded with hundreds of hundreds of public domain books and audio books,” said John Stoneberg, the library’s director.
Stoneberg said the popular tablet computers will be available for use in and outside the library in September.
“We want to offer our customers alternate ways to experience new technology; alternate ways to read books. The Kindle, the Nook, the iPad, they’re all a part of leading that revolution,” Stoneberg said.
After signing a special agreement, the library said customers with a valid library card will be able to take an iPad home and enjoy the wi-fi friendly computer for a week.
Library users WEAU talked to said they’re excited about the new program.
“I’m happy that they’re able to do this without taking taxpayer’s money,” said high school student Ben Krausey.
Other supporters said it will be a good program because they would not be able to afford an iPad of their own.
“It’s not something that I’d buy on my own so I think it would be a good thing to check them out,” said college student Kate Rosemeyer.
Several library-goers said the iPad program would have educational benefits for area students.
“Things are changing all the time. I’m a teacher and kids know many things. It’s important to know where the world is going,” said local teacher Jayne Woodburn.
Workers from the Altoona, Chippewa Falls and Menomonie Public Libraries say they already check out kindles to patrons.
Library directors from Chippewa Falls and Menomonie says they’re looking into getting tablets or lap top computers for check-out in the next year.
