TDSB passes 2011/2012 operating budget
Other items of interest from last night's meeting:
- The board approved a plan to sell healthier beverages in school vending machines as mandated by provincial guidelines.
Under the plan, the company Healthy Vend Canada received a five-year contract to supply juice, milk and bottled water to replace previous offerings of pop and beverages that have high amounts of sugar. Student trustee Zane Schwartz had his motion approved by the board to allow student advisory councils to have final say on the list of products that will appear in the vending machines starting in September.
- The board also approved a five-point plan to guide the TDSB's strategic direction until 2015, a plan to sell off Anthony Public School in North York but allow priority consideration to the MukiBaum Treatment Centre, which operates on the site.
- Board Chair Chris Bolton announced the amalgamation of Bendale Business Technical Institute and David and Mary Thomson Collegiate Institute in Scarborough had been approved by the province.
- TDSB Director Chris Spence handed out special awards to the members of gay-straight alliances from RH King Academy, Lawrence Park Collegiate and Emery Collegiate for their work in combating homophobia.
- Several trustees also helped to take part in a "flash mob" promoting an upcoming day of physical activity at the Canadian National Exhibition, sponsored by the board.
This in turn led a number of trustees to charge that Cary-Meagher’s request for funding “came out of the blue” and that the program could rely on subsidies from outside the board.?Elizabeth Moyer said she supported the program, having volunteered serving breakfast at a school in her ward, but couldn’t stomach the idea of other important programs losing funding. “There are schools with 250 kids that have to work with budgets of $50,000,” said Coteau, trustee for Don Valley East. “Let’s support universal programs.”?An amendment to Cary-Meagher’s motion by Cathy Dandy, that mandated the money for the program be found without impacting other departments, was withdrawn by the trustee from Toronto-Danforth after she was told by staff such a move would cause the budget to run a deficit.Milk Vending Machines - News

I know the comment have you ever seen a poor farmer is familiar to almost all of us but in recent years the dairy sector especially has been very badly hit by tight margins and the buying power of the supermarkets. Many Italian farmers have apparently for a number of years very successfully sold their milk production directly to consumers using a network of specialised milk Vending Machines .
I read that this idea is to be tried out in Ireland and possibly the UK whereby farmers will be given the opportunity to site milk vending machines local to their farms and hopefully provide competitively priced milk with the added convenience of 24/7 availability and a little more margin for them. When you think that most supermarkets only charge £1.50 for 4 litres of milk, that’s barely 20 pence a pint. Considering what goes into producing, milking, pasteurising, packing and then getting it to your shopping trolley I think many farmers may be attracted to this idea.
