A 3-year-old girl went home from the hospital Monday night after nearly drowning Sunday at Hillsboro Family Aquatic Center. Kayla McPhail, Marion, was at the pool with her grandmother, Sheila Thouvenell, Sunday afternoon.
One was in the beach area of Marion County Lake, the other at the aquatic center in Hillsboro. Fast action on the part of people who just happened to be there saved them. I thought of those kids and their grateful families this past weekend.

LOCAL NON-PROFIT SEEKING BOARD AND COMMITTEE CANDIDATES
The Western Washington County Aquatic Center Inc. - a non-profit corporation recently established to build, own and operate a new community aquatic and wellness center - is actively seeking candidates for its board of directors and various committees.
When complete, the Center will offer a complete range of water-based programs for all ages and abilities, including a comprehensive swim lesson program for all ages, through a new swim school; aquatic therapy and other health/wellness-related activities and courses, in cooperation with area healthcare providers; competitive youth and masters swimming water polo, through local aquatics teams, and courses in kayaking, scuba diving and other water sports.
The Center is expected to have a tremendous positive economic impact on the entire community. With scheduled events held virtually every weekend, local tourism, lodging, restaurant and other businesses will see millions of out-of-area dollars coming in from visitors to the Aquatic Center.
Numerous area organizations and businesses have expressed their support for this ground-breaking community resource.
