Keeping Your Car Cool in the Summer Heat

If you're not a fan of running in the heat, you'll still have to drive in it and 100-degree temps can be brutal on your car. You hear the usual, drink lots of water, don't leave kids or pets in the car and check on the elderly. Well, what about your car? You can't just drive it around in the summer heat and expect everything to be okay.

Take your tires. If they're a few years old or there's cracking because the weather has been extreme, cold in the winter and now it's really hot, the heat on the road will only make it worse. If you're driving and you feel the car pulling to one direction or the other, get your tires checked. Make sure the pressure is good because that will add to wear and tear, but don't forget to look under the hood. Driver Trey Weir says, "Under the hood? I don't look much under there." While driver Tena Edwards explains, "Well, the main thing is you got to keep the coolant in there and make sure you're keeping the oil changed." Discount Tire and Brake mechanic Eric Dunn says, "A while ago with some of the older cars, it was like a 70/30 mix as far as the anti-freeze but some of the newer stuff like dex-cool and everything, you can run it 50/50 and it'll have the perfect mixture for your vehicle."

Dunn says it's really simple. If you notice something wrong with your car, don't ignore it because this heat will only make it worse.

Coolant flush and Dexcool

I have Dexcool in a 1982 Ford E-350 Ambulance, a 1995 Honda Passport, and a 1987 RX-7 with a 1986 Pontiac 305 engine. (Also used it in my RX-7 rotary engine rally car) Never had a problem with Dexcool in the 10+ years I have been using it. (No leakages, no apparent corrosion, no blown H2O pumps, no head gasket problems - basically, I have had no problems like those I have read about when I google Dexcool). The early version of DexCool would jell in the system with nothing added. Many times you could pull the rad cap and see DexCool gummed or scummed around the cap spring. The S10s had quite a few heater cores plug around 30k. If caught early you could successfully flush them. If left too long the had to be replaced. The newer stuff hasn't shown that tendency so far. Another neat DexCool feature is it jells in the oil pan rather than turns milky like Green does. Chevy has a large problem with intakes leaking both externally and internally and some of the V8s have heads that crack around the rocker shafts (Castech made). The DexCool will actually jell in the bottom of the pan and plug the oil pickup tube with no foaming issue. It tends to blend right in with the oil in color and is nasty.
