LTD campus project gets rolling
Renovations to Lane Transit District’s University Station began Wednesday to the sounds of revving chainsaws, crashing tree branches, breaking bricks and sighs from several community members.
LTD’s summer project aims to improve foot, bike and vehicle traffic along Kincaid Street and to offer greater transit services and amenities to UO passengers. More than 45,000 passenger boardings take place at the busy station each month.
The $2.3 million LTD project — to be completed in mid-September before students return to class — is part of a much larger renovation effort that will significantly change the western edge of campus. The city of Eugene has secured grant funding for a project that will result in a makeover of the one-block stretch of East 13th Avenue just west of Kincaid — with such features as back-in parking — and about eight blocks of Alder Street. Several of the area’s streets are also getting a repaving this year.
Before LTD can begin to build its new University Station structures, meanwhile, it must first tear up more than a block of pavement.
That doesn’t sit well with Annette Lee, manager of Rennie’s Landing at 1214 Kincaid St. “It’s going to affect patio business on both of my patios,” she said Wednesday.
Other observers expressed concern about the eight trees to be felled to make way for the project — including a towering, 100-foot scarlet oak outside Chiles Hall that was taken down Wednesday by a Blue Sky Tree Care crew.
As oak chunks hit the ground and splintered, community activist Zachary Vishanoff yelled “Go Ducks!”, trying to make light of what he sees as a wholly unnecessary project.
“This is wasteful spending,” Vishanoff said. “This whole plan has been very flawed.”
But the university’s campus arborist, John Anthony, who watched the dismantling out of curiosity, identified the large oak as sickly.
“This tree here is in really bad shape,” he said, pointing to its newly revealed stump. “Sure, I’m sad to see the necessity for it going, but I recognize it was a very unhealthy tree.”
According to LTD, the station’s renovation has been necessitated by the significant increase in ridership over the years.
