Addition of Kinkade art gallery to shuffle Main Street storefronts

A downtown property that recently fell into foreclosure is now owned by a local developer whose plans for the site will bring a couple of changes to Main Street.

Jon Ring recently purchased the three-story building at 334 Main St. and said he intends to open a Thomas Kinkade art gallery in one of the occupied storefronts. Ring’s new business is registered with the state, but he said he doesn’t expect to open the gallery until late this year or early next.

“I’ve always kind of wanted to put in a gallery,” Ring said of his latest venture. “That’s why I bought the property.”

Kinkade’s paintings are sold in malls across the country and usually depict innocuous themes meant to appeal to a broad audience. There are 13 such galleries in Tennessee, according to his company’s website.

The CoolSprings Galleria hosted a Kinkade gallery from 2000 to 2006, according to a spokesman for the Franklin mall.

Ring bought the downtown building for $1.2 million, which represents a significant discount on the $2.3 million asking price initially sought by Pinnacle National Bank when it claimed the structure late last year. The bank foreclosed when Centrum Properties of Chicago fell on hard times during the recession.

Rick Warwick, a historian for the Heritage Foundation of Franklin and Williamson County, said at the time of the foreclosure that it was probably during the mid-1920s when a bank last seized a downtown property.

Two retailers operate out of the ground level of 334 Main St. The upper floors remain vacant. To make way for the new business, Ring will be pushing out one of the tenants, A Curious Gourmet, which specializes in kitchen items and offers cooking demonstrations. A Curious Gourmet opened in late 2008.

Deborah Griffin, owner of A Curious Gourmet, just finalized a deal to share space with Serendipity, a day spa and salon at 405 Main St. She expects to begin moving her inventory in August.

Griffin said she is disappointed to lose the downtown lease, especially now that she’s beginning to make some strides. A Curious Gourmet opened during the recession but survived it and the subsequent dip in tourism. Beginning in November, the store added locally made food items and wares so that out-of-towners could more easily find a memento from their Tennessee vacation.
