Le Mans, Saturday 11 June, 15.41: not quite an hour into the 79th 24 Hours, images flashed around the circuit of what looked like the worst possible kind of accident. Audi driver Allan McNish, challenging for the lead, had touched a slower car in one of the fastest corners on the circuit, skipped across the wide gravel traps at almost undiminished speed and suffered a huge, half-rolling impact , narrowly avoiding clearing the barriers into massed photographers, and beyond those and the debris fences, packed spectators.

Not quite five hours later, in darkness, the aftermath of another accident, even more massive, smoking wreckage spread over such an area that it took time even to identify another Audi. Like McNish, Mike Rockenfeller had touched a slower car, going off at one of the fastest parts of the circuit, reducing his Audi to a 300-metre-long debris field.

All owe their lives to continuous advances in racing safety, and nowhere is that more striking than at Le Mans, where accidents are a fact of life. Much of the circuit, as ever was, is public road; four times every lap, night and day, rain or shine, cars top 200mph on these "road" sections, with the treacherous mix of faster prototypes and slower GT cars.

McNish's accident began at more than 140mph; the impact occurred at not much less. At close to 200mph, Rockenfeller's had the severity (and look) of an aeroplane accident.

McNish's made print, TV and web around the world - showering bodywork and major components, momentarily cresting the barriers before snagging and spinning back. Ominous silence and frightened faces told their own story. But marshals rolled the inverted remains upright, a door opened and McNish half climbed, half fell out, essentially uninjured.

Rockenfeller's sanctuary comprised little more than his Audi's totally denuded safety cell, charred by a brief flash fire as it destroyed itself along the barriers, while staying inside them. A sea of flashing blue lights again suggested the worst, but eventually news came of another miraculous escape.

Both miracles were founded on stringent rules and extraordinary engineering. A Le Mans prototype is faster in a straight line than a Formula One car, and heavier, so Le Mans accidents can be horrific. In the past, fully-bodied (as opposed to open-wheeled) Le Mans cars have flown, clearing barriers and reaching the far more perilous environment of the trees.
