Bay Days in Bay Village will feature music, parade, classic car show

BAY VILLAGE The annual Bay Days celebration will run for four days over the July 4 weekend, featuring live music daily at the gazebo, a parade, a classic car show and a vintage base ball game.

The local Kiwanis Club, which organizes the event, recently released the schedule of events. The celebration in Cahoon Memorial Park runs June 30, July 1, 2 and 4. Booths and rides will be open from noon until 10:30 p.m. daily. No activities will be held on July 3 because the Cahoon will, which established the land as a city park, prohibits games and sports in the park on Sundays.

About a dozen community organizations — including the Bay Men’s Club, local Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts, the Kiwanis Club, auxiliary police, the Bay High School wrestling team and the local Democratic and Republican clubs — will be participating this year with booths and activities. The list of participants was still being finalized.

Bay Days is a major fundraising event for most of the organizations that participate, said Tony Dostal, who helps organize the activities on behalf of the Kiwanis Club.

“For most of them, it’s their major fundraiser,” Dostal said.

Music will be a major attraction, he said.

“Every night we’re going to have a band in the gazebo, and we’re going to have a band on Saturday afternoon and Monday afternoon in the gazebo, which we’ve never done before,” he said.

Another popular event is the Classic Car Cruise-In beginning at 5 p.m. on July 1, Dostal said. Last year, about 175 cars participated. A disc jockey, DJ Cadillac Mike, will play ’50s and ’60s music. Donations from participants will go to the Laurie Wilder Fund for combating cystic fibrosis.

A fireworks display, which closes out the weekend celebration, is scheduled for 9:45 p.m. July 4.

The Bike, Trike and Wagon Parade will be held at the gazebo beginning at 11:30 a.m. July 4, which is 30 minutes before the booths and rides open.

“That’s always a popular event with the little tykes,” Dostal said. “They decorate their bikes, wagons and tricycles.”

Another popular event is the reading of the Declaration of Independence by Bay resident Pete Dannemiller, said Rhonda Schneider, another Kiwanis member. That will take place at noon on July 4.
