Discounts available to Corn Roast Festival volunteers

Volunteers are needed for the 2011 Old Fashioned Corn Roast Festival set for Aug. 26-27 at Fairgrounds Park.

While volunteer opportunities are open to individual members of the community, organizations that contribute volunteers meeting the criteria listed are eligible for discounts on several Corn Roast Festival opportunities.

"Each year it takes more than 100 volunteers to make the Old Fashioned Corn Roast Festival as successful as it can be," said Jim Worthen, director of investor relations for the Loveland Chamber of Commerce, in a news release.

Volunteers are needed for event setup; corn cooking throughout the event; staging and crowd control for the Corn Roast Festival Parade; corn sales throughout the event; information booth staffing; Corn Shucking Contest setup, cleanup and crowd management; and Corn Eating Contest setup and teardown. Volunteers can choose the event and time of their service on a first-come, first-served basis.

Organizations that contribute 10 volunteers to work four-hour shifts each will be eligible for a 50 percent discount on a corn shucking team entry, parade entry or vendor booth, and those that contribute 15 volunteers to work four-hour shifts each will pay nothing.

Discount opportunities are limited and will be accepted on a first-come, first serve basis. Volunteer application forms for those seeking discounts are available at www.loveland. org/TheCornRoastFestival. Those interested in volunteering can submit entries to info@loveland.org or fax to (970) 667-5211.

The chamber seeks volunteers who are at least 16 years old, and children younger than 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

How to Grill Corn on the Cob

For many people, summer means freshly picked corn on the cob. What better way to eat it than hot off the grill, basted in buttery goodness? In addition to its delicious taste, corn offers several nutrients, including folate, vitamin B-5, thiamin, fiber, vitamin C, manganese and phosphorus. Take care when selecting your corn to guarantee the best grilling results. For optimum nutrition and taste, purchase corn stored in a cool place. Check that supermarket corn is refrigerated and that corn from the farmer’s market is kept in a shady place. Select corn with fresh, green husks. Pull back a portion of the husk to ensure that kernels are tightly arranged and plump. When you press your fingernail on a kernel, watch for a milky substance, which indicates freshness. Remember to purchase your corn the same day you plan to grill it since its flavor will fade quickly.
