Mayor Dick O'Brien won't seek re-election
MUSCATINE, Iowa — Muscatine’s longest-serving mayor won’t seek re-election this fall.
Dick O’Brien, 84, who’s occupied the mayor’s office in City Hall and presided at City Council meetings since 1996, announced Tuesday he will sit out the Nov. 8 election.
It’ll be the first time O’Brien’s name hasn’t appeared on the ballot since he was elected to the City Council in 1993. After serving two years on the Council, O’Brien was elected mayor in November 1995.
“I’m not sure what I’ll do,” he said. “I can’t just go home and watch TV. I’ll have to look for something to keep me busy.”
He started his record-setting mayoral run Jan. 1, 1996. His last day on the part-time job will be Dec. 31.
“I’ve enjoyed it. Coming to work every morning is something I have looked forward to,” O’Brien said from his office at City Hall. “I just hope that whoever follows me will enjoy it as much as I have.”
The job pays $6,500 annually. O’Brien said he typically puts in about 20 hours per week on the job, which works out to slightly better than $6 per hour.
Someone with full-time employment outside of City Hall could also perform the mayor’s duties, O’Brien said.
“They just need to listen to people — and, of course, listen to the Council,” O’Brien said.
Council members weighed in to
praise the longtime mayor.
Mark LeRette said he’ll miss O’Brien’s stentorian tones during Council meetings.
“Having someone else read those agenda items is going to take a lot of getting used to,” LeRette said in an email. “His professional, positive approach to the office will be hard to replace.”
Dyann Roby wrote that her friend “has a sense of humor but is serious about his position as Mayor.”
Osama Shihadeh advised the mayor that “it is time to lean back and enjoy your retirement in comfort.”
Echoing O’Brien’s catch phrase (“Good things are happening in Muscatine”), Phil Fitzgerald wrote that “good things will still happen in Muscatine but hopefully good things will be in store for Dick when he leaves office.”
City Administrator Gregg Mandsager called O’Brien “a true ambassador for Muscatine.”
Mandsager’s predecessor, Urbandale City Manager A.J. Johnson, who served alongside O’Brien from the time O’Brien took office until 2009, wrote that the retiring mayor “has set the bar extremely high for the next person who will occupy that seat.
