Fantasy Faire returns to Millville's WheatonArts

MILLVILLE — Characters from folklore, fairy tales and fantasy come to life on June 25 and 26 at the Fantasy Faire at WheatonArts.

The event is a family-friendly festival blending historic fact with myth and popular fantasy from the medieval and renaissance periods of history. Knights and princesses stand side-by-side with elves and fairies, and the day is filled with performances pleasing to children of all ages.

The event is produced by WheatonArts in partnership with Mystic Realms, a local theater club. The theme is the general Medieval to Renaissance period. Performers bring to life the “Kingdom of Wheaton” by enacting a series of interconnected shows that tell the story of the day.

There are villains, heroes and a grand tournament at the end, as well as, renaissance music, dancing, singing, free children’s crafts, wandering minstrels, and sword-fighting. Strolling costumed characters, portraying historical and mythical figures, will interact with visitors on the grounds. A wide variety of educational shows, performances and demonstrations are offered throughout the day.

This year’s highlighted events include:

* Lucas Simmons, internationally known performer, defies death and logic with his one-of-a-kind “Stupid Human Danger Show,” a family friendly sideshow demonstrating daredevil stunts and other tricks.

* Phoenix Swords, a professional medieval performance team from Massachusetts, will offer a display of martial proficiency using weapons from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance.

* The Grymm Witches will delight children and parents with their funny antics, story-telling skills and comedic delight.

* Seamus McDougal, Philadelphia’s foremost whip expert, will display his talents at whip cracking in single and double whip demonstrations with audience participation and free lessons.

* The Misplaced Pub musicians will perform traditional ballads as they wander through the Faire.

* Costumed characters will raise the “Spring Pole” and everyone (especially the children) can participate in the traditional ceremonial dance that wraps the pole with ribbons to music.

* The “Hofla” stage offers performers from many local dancing troupes demonstrating various types of dancing and drumming techniques from the 1500s to 1700s. They will have a trading post around their stage.

We have been meaning to post this up for a while, so apologies to Sillof on the lateness.

He e-mailed us a couple of months ago asking if we would feature his latest collection of outstanding genre themed Star Wars tribute figures, (see our last post on his amazing work HERE ). This time around he has used a medieval theme to re-imagine what Chewbacca, Han Solo, Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker and the rest of the cyber gang would look  in a line he has called ‘ Long Ago & Far Away You are told as much with the first words of the movie with a line straight out of a fairy tale “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away”.  A classic story of good verses evil where the young hero who has to rescue the princess with the help of the trusty old knight.   Much of the awe in Star Wars comes from the magic of the Force rather then the complexity of the technology thus making it more of a fantasy film then a Sci Fi film in my opinion.
